Suggestions for Adapting the PASA for Students with Visual Impairments
Welcome to the PASA 2010 Vision Adaptations Section

In this section you will find:

  1. Link to colored versions of the PASA materials (i.e., pictures and photographs). Download the PDF file, print on a color printer, and cut out the materials for use.
  2. PASA 2010 Tactual Version of the PASA For Students Who Cannot Visually Access Pictures or Print. Tactual adaptations have been made to the test items along with auditory and other options. These full assessments are meant for students without enough usable vision to use picture or print materials and/or for adaptation ideas for students with visual impairment who cannot use the all or part of the standard assessment.
  3. PowerPoint presentation - training Webinar.
  4. PowerPoint presentation - general adaptation guidelines.
  5. Braille format examples for tables and bar charts to assist in adapting materials for the tactual versions of Level B and C Math.
  6. Auditory accommodation suggestions for Level A Reading.
  7. List of words, sentences, and paragraphs that will need to be brailled in Level B & C Reading.

How do I know what to use?

My student has enough usable vision to use print and pictures for most tasks:

  • Use the regular version of the PASA (test booklets that were shipped to you) and adapt the print, pictures, and photographs as necessary.
  • Consider using the colored version of the PASA materials if your student needs color to help interpret the materials.
  • Consult the Tactual Versions of the PASA posted below when you encounter test items your student cannot do with visual materials. If you use select even one test item from these versions, please do the following:
    1. State on camera that the student will be assessed with the Tactual Version.
    2. Indicate on the media bag label that the adapted test items from the PASA website were used.
    3. Indicate on the Supporting Documentation Form that the Tactual Version was used.

My student does NOT have enough usable vision to use print and pictures for most tasks:

  • Use the PASA Tactual Version of the assessment posted below for your student's assigned grade and difficulty level (A, B, or C). If the student was assessed using all or even 1 of the test items from the Tactual Version, please do the following to ensure accurate scoring:
    1. State on camera that the student will be assessed with the Tactual Version.
    2. Indicate on the media bag label that the adapted test items from the PASA website were used.
    3. Indicate on the Supporting Documentation Form that the Tactual Version was used.
  • Request a special materials kit for the Tactual Version by contacting Shawn Davis - smdavis@pitt.edu (Refer to the Tactual Version for the procedure.)
  • Consult the auditory suggestions chart posted below if your student has limited use of the tactile sense and is taking Level A Reading. Note: Use of these suggestions will require making recordings of environmental sounds or downloading of audio clips.
  • Special Note: Even though the 3/4 A and 5/6 A Reading Test are object-based, please consult the Tactual Version for other supports embedded within.
